How to share iftar costs with PayMeDaba
A group iftar starts with logistics: booking a table for sunset, or shopping for a meal at home. Either way, one person pays and then has to collect the shares, sometimes from ten people.
With PayMeDaba, the organiser sends a money request to each guest with their share and a note like "Friday iftar, set menu 150 MAD". Each guest pays with their PIN, and the organiser sees on their home screen which requests are still pending.
Another option: share your pay link paymedaba.com/@username in the WhatsApp group. Each person opens it and sends their share directly, without waiting for a request.
Organise a shared iftar in 4 steps
- Set the price per person. For a restaurant, the set iftar menu; for a home meal, an estimate of the shopping.
- Confirm the guest list. The headcount drives both the booking and the shares.
- Collect before or after. Before, so you do not front the booking alone; after, if the final amount depends on orders.
- Track payments. Each payment triggers a notification. Unpaid requests stay visible on your home screen.
Example: an iftar with colleagues in Casablanca
Rachid organises iftar for his team of eight at a downtown restaurant. The set menu is 150 MAD per person, 1,200 MAD in total, which Rachid pays the restaurant.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Bill paid by Rachid | 1,200 MAD |
| Requests sent | 7 × 150 MAD |
| Fee paid by each colleague (0.1%) | 0.15 MAD |
| Amount Rachid receives | 1,050 MAD |
Each colleague pays 150.15 MAD in total, and Rachid receives 1,050 MAD with no fee: the bill minus his own share.
At home: Imane hosts six friends for iftar. The shopping (harira, chebakia, msemen, juice, dates) costs 560 MAD. Each of the seven owes 80 MAD; Imane sends six requests of 80 MAD and each friend pays a 0.08 MAD fee. See pricing.
Tips to avoid awkwardness
- State the price in the invitation. "Thursday iftar, 150 MAD each": no surprises.
- Collect before booking. If the restaurant wants a deposit, requests sent a week ahead mean you do not front it alone.
- Plan for dropouts. Someone cancels? Cancel their pending request, or agree together how to split if the booking is already paid.
- Round up for the tip. 150 MAD instead of 143 MAD leaves something for the staff, as long as you say so.
- Keep it discreet. Requests land on each person's phone, so no envelope goes round the table.
