Flatshare rent and bills, shared without tension

In a flatshare in Casablanca, Rabat or Tangier, money is often the first source of friction. With PayMeDaba, whoever pays the landlord or the bills will collect each share with a few requests every month.

How to handle flatshare costs with PayMeDaba

In most flatshares, one person pays the landlord, another pays the water and electricity bill, a third the internet. Paying is not the problem; getting everyone's share back on time without chasing is.

With PayMeDaba, each flatmate who covers a cost sends a money request to each of the others, with their share and a clear note ("October rent", "September water and electricity"). Everyone pays their request with their PIN and the money arrives instantly.

There is no shared flat account in the app: each person keeps their own balance. That is deliberate: one expense, one request per flatmate.

Share flatshare costs in 4 steps

  1. Split the roles. Who pays the landlord, who pays the water and electricity bill, who pays the internet.
  2. Agree on the split. Equal shares, or rent based on room size: decide once.
  3. Send requests each time a bill is paid. Whoever covered it sends each flatmate a request.
  4. Track who has paid. Pending requests stay on your home screen until paid. Each flatmate finds their own payments in their activity.

Example: three flatmates in Casablanca

Nadia, Ilyas and Soukaina share a flat in Maârif. Rent is 7,500 MAD a month, which Nadia pays the landlord. This month Nadia also paid the water and electricity bill (420 MAD) and internet (300 MAD). They split everything equally.

Paid by NadiaTotalEach share
Rent7,500 MAD2,500 MAD
Water and electricity420 MAD140 MAD
Internet300 MAD100 MAD

Nadia sends Ilyas and Soukaina two requests each: 2,500 MAD for rent and 240 MAD for the bills. When paying, each covers the 0.1% fee: 2.50 MAD on rent and 0.24 MAD on bills, 2.74 MAD a month. Nadia receives 2 × 2,740 = 5,480 MAD, with no fee.

Good to know: a 2,500 MAD transfer is above the planned limit without ID verification (1,000 MAD per transfer). The flatmates will need to verify their national ID card in the app (level 1: up to 10,000 MAD per transfer). These limits are planned and may change to meet regulatory requirements. Tips to avoid tension

  • Write the rules down when you move in. Each share, when requests go out, who pays what.
  • Send requests on a fixed date. The 1st of the month for rent, for example, so everyone plans ahead.
  • One note per expense. "Water and electricity, September bill" answers questions before they come up.
  • Keep the bills. A photo in the flat's WhatsApp group is enough to back up the amount.
  • Plan for move-outs. When a flatmate leaves, settle their last share of the bills before they go.

Why PayMeDaba for a flatshare

  • No monthly bank transfers to set up: one request, one PIN-confirmed payment.
  • Everyone pays the right amount: it is in the request, nothing to copy.
  • Instant, around the clock: rent arrives on time even on a month-end Sunday.
  • Withdraw to the bank: whoever pays the landlord by bank transfer can withdraw the money to their RIB, free of charge, within 24 to 48 business hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can we open a shared account for the flat?

No. PayMeDaba has no shared account or balance. Each flatmate has their own account. Whoever covers a cost sends a request to each of the others, and each pays it on their side.

How much does paying my rent share cost?

The fee is 0.1% of the amount, paid by the sender and rounded up to the next centime. For a 2,500 MAD rent share, that is 2.50 MAD. The flatmate receiving pays nothing.

Can I send 2,500 MAD without verifying my ID?

Not under the planned limits. Without verification, a transfer is capped at 1,000 MAD and 1,000 MAD per day. After verifying your national ID card and a selfie in the app, the planned cap rises to 10,000 MAD per transfer. These limits may change to meet regulatory requirements.

Can the landlord be paid with PayMeDaba?

Only if they have a PayMeDaba account, since transfers happen between accounts. Otherwise, the flatmate who pays them collects the shares in the app, then withdraws the money to their bank account for the usual transfer.

How do I know who has paid their share?

The requests you sent that are still unpaid stay visible on your home screen. When a flatmate pays, you get a notification and the payment shows in your activity.
