How to organise a group gift with PayMeDaba
For a colleague leaving, a new baby, a friend's birthday or a cousin's graduation, people club together to give something nicer. Choosing the gift is the easy part; collecting the money is not: the envelope passed around, the change, the people who will "pay tomorrow".
With PayMeDaba, the organiser sends a money request to each participant with the amount and a note like "Karim's leaving gift". Each person pays with their PIN, or declines if they would rather not take part. The money lands in the organiser's account as people pay.
PayMeDaba has no group collection feature: no shared balance and no contribution page. The organiser receives the shares in their own account and buys the gift.
Organise the gift in 4 steps
- Choose the gift and the amount per person. Announce it in the group: "100 MAD each, give what you like".
- Send each participant a request. Tap "Request", choose the person by @username or number, enter the amount and note.
- Track contributions. Unpaid requests stay on your home screen; each payment triggers a notification.
- Buy the gift. Once the shares are in, withdraw them to your bank account if needed, free of charge, within 24 to 48 business hours.
Example: a colleague leaving in Tangier
Karim is leaving the Tangier office after eight years. Hind organises the gift with eleven colleagues: twelve people including her, 100 MAD each, for a 1,200 MAD gift.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Requests sent by Hind | 11 × 100 MAD |
| Fee paid by each colleague (0.1%) | 0.10 MAD |
| Received by Hind | 1,100 MAD |
| Hind's own share | 100 MAD |
| Gift budget | 1,200 MAD |
Two colleagues want to give 150 MAD: Hind sends them 150 MAD requests instead of 100 MAD, with a 0.15 MAD fee each. The budget rises to 1,300 MAD, enough to add flowers. Hind receives every share with no fee. See pricing.
Tips to avoid awkwardness
- Keep it voluntary. Suggest an amount, and accept that some give less or nothing.
- Warn before sending. An unannounced request can feel pushy. A message in the group first, then the requests.
- Respect a decline. A colleague declines? Do not chase: PayMeDaba's discretion keeps it from becoming an issue.
- Cancel extra requests. Once the budget is reached, cancel any still pending.
- Be open about the purchase. A photo of the gift and receipt in the group reassures everyone.
Why PayMeDaba for a group gift
- No more envelope: everyone chips in from their phone, even when working remotely or in another city.
- Simple tracking: pending requests are listed on your home screen.
- Discreet: each person's amount is visible only to them and the organiser.
- Tiny fees: 0.10 MAD on a 100 MAD contribution, nothing for the organiser receiving.
